class="wp-block-paragraph">A designer picks a soft gray for body text on a white page. It looks elegant on her bright monitor. Then a user opens the page on a phone in sunlight and can barely read it. Another user has low vision and cannot read it at all. Color contrast decides whether people can see your content. This guide explains how contrast works, which numbers to meet, and how to check your designs.

What Is Color Contrast?

Color contrast is the difference in brightness between two colors, usually text and its background. Black on white has the highest contrast. Light gray on white has very low contrast. Contrast is measured as a ratio from 1 to 1, which means no difference, up to 21 to 1, which is black on white. Higher ratios are easier to read.

Contrast is not the same as hue difference. Red text on a green background can look vivid and still be hard to read, because the two colors have similar brightness. Brightness is what matters most.

Why Color Contrast Matters

Good contrast helps almost everyone. It supports people with low vision and color blindness. It also helps users on small screens, in bright light, with dim displays, or when tired. Weak contrast raises effort, slows reading, and causes errors in forms and buttons. It also exposes businesses to legal risk, since accessibility rules point to WCAG contrast levels as the standard. Clear contrast is also a basic part of readable, scannable pages, as covered in these dos and don’ts for better UX readability.

The WCAG Contrast Requirements

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines set minimum ratios. Level AA is the common target for laws and contracts.

Normal text: at least 4.5 to 1.

Large text: at least 3 to 1. Large means 24 pixels or bigger, or about 18.7 pixels and bigger when bold.

UI components and graphics: at least 3 to 1 for things users need to see, such as input borders, icons, checkbox outlines, and focus rings.

Level AAA: 7 to 1 for normal text and 4.5 to 1 for large text. This level is rarely required in full, but it is a good goal for long reading.

Some items are exempt. Disabled controls, pure decoration, and logos do not need to meet the ratios. Even so, make disabled states readable enough that users understand them.

How Contrast Ratios Are Calculated

The ratio compares the relative luminance of two colors. Luminance is a measure of perceived brightness, adjusted for how the eye sees red, green, and blue. You do not need to do the math. Tools calculate it from two color values. What matters is knowing that small changes in lightness can move a pair from passing to failing, so always check the exact values.

Where Contrast Matters in a UI

Body text and headings. Aim above the minimum for long reading. A pair that barely passes at 4.5 to 1 can still feel tiring on a page with paragraphs.

Buttons. Check the label against the button fill. Also check the button against the page background, since the shape needs to be visible too.

Form fields. Light gray borders on white fail the 3 to 1 rule for UI components. A user who cannot see the field edge may not find the field.

Icons. Icons that carry meaning, such as a warning or a menu, need 3 to 1 against their background.

Focus indicators. Keyboard users rely on them. A thin faint ring is a common failure.

Links in body text. If links differ from surrounding text only by color, they need at least 3 to 1 against the body text, plus a non-color cue such as an underline.

Placeholder text. It must meet 4.5 to 1 if users need it to understand a field. Faint placeholders are a frequent failure.

Charts and data visuals. Lines, bars, and labels need enough contrast against the background and against each other.

Color Alone Is Not Enough

Contrast is only part of the story. Never use color as the only way to show meaning. An error shown only in red fails for users who cannot tell red from other colors. Add an icon, a text label, or a pattern. Do the same for chart series, status tags, and required fields. This idea ties closely to how users spot clickable items, a point explained in this guide on what affordance is in UX.

Contrast and Visual Hierarchy

Contrast is also a tool for guiding the eye. The strongest contrast draws attention first, so use it for what matters most, such as a primary button or a key headline. Lower-priority text can use a softer tone, as long as it still passes the minimum. When everything has maximum contrast, nothing stands out. Learn how size, color, and weight work together in this guide to visual hierarchy.

Contrast in Dark Mode

Dark themes bring their own traps. Pure white text on pure black can glare and cause eye strain, so many designers use off-white on dark gray. Saturated colors that look fine on white can vibrate on dark backgrounds, so use lighter, softer versions. Check every pair again in the dark theme, since a color that passed in light mode may fail in dark. Define colors by purpose, such as “text-primary” and “surface,” so each theme can have its own tested values.

Contrast Over Images and Gradients

Text on photos is one of the hardest cases. Contrast changes across the image, so one pair of colors cannot be checked. Safer options include:

Adding a solid or semi-transparent overlay behind the text.

Placing text in a solid box or card on top of the image.

Using a gradient scrim that darkens the area under the text.

Choosing images with calm, even areas where text will sit.

Test the worst spot, not the best. Also check how the layout looks when the image changes, such as in a CMS where editors upload new photos.

Contrast in Popular Visual Styles

Some styles make contrast harder. Flat design often uses bright colors on bright backgrounds, which can fail quickly. Glassmorphism places text on blurred, see-through panels, so contrast depends on what sits behind. Soft, low-contrast looks may be trendy, but they often fail the numbers. Pick a style that can stay readable, or adjust it until the pairs pass.

How to Test Color Contrast

Test early, in the mockup stage.

Contrast checkers. The WebAIM Contrast Checker and similar tools take two color values and show the ratio and pass or fail results.

Design tool plugins. Plugins for Figma and Sketch, such as Stark and Contrast, check pairs right on the canvas.

Browser tools. Chrome and Firefox developer tools show the contrast ratio when you inspect an element and flag failures.

Automated scanners. Tools such as axe DevTools, WAVE, and Lighthouse catch many text contrast errors in a built page. They cannot check text over images or every state, so manual checks still matter.

Simulators. Color-blindness and grayscale views show whether meaning survives without color. A quick way to check is to view the design in grayscale.

Real conditions. View designs on different screens, at low brightness, and outdoors if you can.

Real users. Include people with low vision in tests. A structured usability testing and feedback loops process can reveal problems that tools miss.

How to Fix Failing Contrast

Most failures have simple fixes. Darken the text color or lighten the background until the ratio passes. Keep the same hue and adjust only the lightness, so the brand look stays intact. Increase font size or weight to qualify for the lower large-text ratio, where that makes sense. Add a border or outline to buttons and fields that blend into the page. Add an overlay behind text on images. If a brand color fails as text, use it for large shapes and icons, and use a darker shade for small text.

Building Contrast Into a Design System

Fixing contrast screen by screen is slow. Build it into your foundations instead. Define a color palette with tested pairs, such as which text colors may sit on which surfaces, and document the ratios. Use named tokens so a change to one value updates every use. Test every component in each state, including hover, disabled, error, and focus. A well-built design systems and component library makes accessible contrast the default, so each new screen starts from safe choices.
