The call to action (CTA) is the element that makes that move possible. It is small, often just a button and a few words, yet it carries a large share of your conversion results.

When a CTA works, visitors barely notice it. They simply know what to do next. When it fails, they hesitate, click the wrong thing or leave. This guide covers how to design CTAs that work, and the mistakes that quietly weaken them.

What Is a Call to Action?

A call to action is an interface element, usually a button or link, that prompts users to take a specific next step. CTAs appear everywhere: hero sections, product pages, forms, emails, banners, pricing tables and in-app prompts.

A CTA has two parts that must work together:

The visual design: how the element looks, where it sits and how prominent it is

The message: the words that tell people what will happen when they click

A beautifully designed button with vague wording fails, and so does clear wording on a button no one notices.

Why CTA Design Matters

It converts attention into action. Interest means nothing until someone clicks.

It reduces decision effort. A clear next step spares visitors from working out where to go.

It affects every funnel stage. From “Learn more” to “Pay now,” CTAs guide people through the journey.

Small changes can have large effects. CTA copy, color, size and placement are among the most frequently tested elements in conversion work.

Types of CTAs

Primary CTA

The main action you want most visitors to take on a page, such as “Start free trial” or “Add to cart.” There should usually be only one per view.

Secondary CTA

A supporting option for visitors not ready for the primary action, such as “See how it works” or “Compare plans.” It should look clearly less prominent.

Tertiary and text-link CTAs

Low-emphasis actions like “Cancel” or “Skip for now.” These give people an exit without competing with the main goal.

Contextual and inline CTAs

Links or buttons within content, such as at the end of a section or article, that connect what someone just read with a relevant next step.

Sticky and persistent CTAs

Buttons that stay visible as users scroll, common on mobile product pages and long landing pages.

Best Practices for CTA Design

1. Make the action unmistakable

A CTA should look clickable and be easy to find within a second or two. Use a button shape, sufficient size and strong contrast against the background. A button that blends into the page, or a plain text link hiding in a paragraph, is easy to miss. This ties directly to the idea of affordance: design should signal what can be clicked.

2. Good copy answers the unspoken question, “What happens when I click?” Strong UX writing keeps CTA text short, clear and honest.

A few guidelines:

Keep it to two to five words where possible

Focus on benefit or outcome, not mechanics

Match the wording to the visitor’s stage: “See pricing” suits someone exploring, “Buy now” suits someone ready

Avoid first-person and second-person confusion unless you have tested it (“Start my trial” vs. “Start your trial”)

3. Establish a clear hierarchy

When several actions compete, none wins. Give one primary CTA the strongest visual weight, use quieter styles for secondary actions and keep tertiary options as simple links. Good visual hierarchy tells visitors what matters most without needing to read anything.

4. Use color and contrast purposefully

There is no single “best” CTA color. What matters is contrast with its surroundings and consistency across the product. Reserve your most vivid action color for primary CTAs so it keeps its meaning. Ensure the label has strong contrast against the button, aiming for at least 4.5:1, and that the button itself stands out against the background, with at least 3:1 for UI components.

5. Size and space for easy clicking

CTAs should be large enough to notice and to tap comfortably, with a minimum touch target around 44 by 44 pixels. Surround them with enough space so they do not look crowded. Generous white space around a button is a simple way to draw attention to it.

6. Place CTAs where decisions happen

Position the CTA near the content that motivates action. Common placements include the hero section, beside pricing or product details, at the end of persuasive sections and after proof such as testimonials. On long pages, repeat the primary CTA at logical points so visitors never have to scroll back. Placement above the fold helps visitors who are ready immediately, but it is not a rule. People who need more information often convert further down.

7. Reduce friction and anxiety nearby

Short supporting text close to the button can remove last-moment doubts: “No credit card required,” “Cancel anytime,” “Takes 2 minutes.” Keep these reassurances truthful and brief, and place them directly under or beside the CTA.

8. Be consistent across the product

The same action should look and read the same everywhere. Inconsistent styles and labels make people stop and think. A shared set of button styles in a design system keeps primary, secondary and tertiary CTAs predictable.

9. Show clear states

Buttons need visible hover, focus, active, disabled and loading states. After a click, give immediate feedback, such as a spinner or label change (“Submitting…”), so people do not click twice. If a button is disabled, explain why, for example “Select a size to continue.”

10.
