Stakeholders love them because they let every team have a spot on the homepage. Usability researchers are often skeptical, because many users never see anything beyond the first slide.

The truth sits in the middle. Carousels and sliders are neither good nor bad by default. They work well in specific situations and fail badly in others. This guide explains what they are, when they earn their place, how to design them well and which mistakes to avoid.

What Are Carousels and Sliders?

A carousel is a UI component that displays a set of items, such as images, cards, products or messages, one or several at a time, letting users move through them horizontally (or sometimes vertically). A slider usually refers to the same pattern, though the word is also used for a different control: a range slider that lets users pick a value, such as a price filter. This article focuses on content carousels.

Common types include:

Hero carousels: a rotating banner at the top of a page

Product or card carousels: rows of items users can scroll through

Testimonial sliders: rotating customer quotes

Image galleries: photos on a product or listing page

Onboarding carousels: step-by-step introductions in apps

Stories-style carousels: full-screen, tap-through content common in social apps

Why Teams Use Carousels

They save space, fitting more content into a limited area

They suit visual content, such as products, photos and portfolios

They reduce vertical scrolling, especially on mobile

They resolve internal debates by giving multiple stakeholders a share of the page

They feel familiar, since users know the swipe and arrow patterns from social and e-commerce apps

These benefits are real, but they come with costs that teams often underestimate.

The Problems with Carousels

Low engagement on later slides

Studies of real-world carousels have repeatedly found that the vast majority of interactions happen on the first slide, and later slides get very little attention. Content placed on slide four is often content nobody sees.

Banner blindness and competing messages

Rotating banners can look like advertising, and users may skip them. When a carousel contains many unrelated messages, none of them stands out. This weakens visual hierarchy, because the page no longer has one clear focal point.

Auto-rotation frustrations

Automatically advancing slides can move content away just as someone starts reading it. This is annoying for all users, and it creates serious problems for people with cognitive, motor or vision impairments.

Hidden content and poor discoverability

Hiding items off-screen forces users to take action to see them. Make sure the first slide earns its place

Since most users see only the first slide, treat it as the main message. Put your most important content and call to action there, and treat later slides as bonuses.

2. Limit the number of slides

Keep carousels short, typically three to five items for banners. For product rows, more items are fine, but make sure the content is relevant and sorted by value.

3. Avoid auto-rotation, or give users control

If you must auto-advance, include a clearly visible pause or stop button, pause on hover and focus, and use a slow, readable pace. Better still, let users control progression. Accessibility guidelines require that moving content can be paused, stopped or hidden when it lasts more than a few seconds.

4. Design clear, discoverable controls

Use prominent arrows, indicators (dots or progress bars) and an obvious position display. Controls should be large enough to tap comfortably, with at least a 44 by 44 pixel target size on touch screens. Keep them in consistent positions, and ensure they meet contrast requirements.

5. Show a peek of the next item

Partially revealing the next card or image is one of the simplest ways to signal that content continues. It invites interaction without needing explanatory text.

6. Support multiple input methods

Make sure users can navigate with swipes, taps, mouse clicks and keyboard controls. Include visible focus states and a logical tab order. Optimize for mobile and responsive behavior

Swiping is natural on touch devices, but layouts need to adapt. Adjust the number of visible items per breakpoint, avoid text that becomes unreadable on small screens and prevent horizontal swipes from conflicting with page scrolling. Our responsive design best practices guide covers how components should behave across devices.

8. Keep content readable and consistent

Use concise text, strong contrast and consistent layouts across slides. Avoid text baked into images, which can become blurry or unreadable, can’t be translated and isn’t accessible to screen readers.

9. Add meaningful motion, not decoration

Smooth, short transitions help users understand what is happening, while flashy effects distract. Well-considered micro-interactions such as subtle easing on swipes and clear feedback on button presses make a carousel feel responsive without slowing it down.

10. Optimize performance

Compress images, lazy-load slides that are off-screen and avoid heavy scripts. A slow carousel can harm page speed and overall user experience, especially on mobile connections.

11. Provide alternatives

Where possible, give users another way to reach the content, such as a link to “View all” or a grid view. This helps people who do not interact with the carousel and also supports search and navigation.

12.
