it

Somewhere between booking the venue and finalising the caterer, most couples in Bangalore realise they haven’t thought about the dance yet. Then comes the panic. The sangeet is in six weeks, the cousins want a family medley, your mother has already told everyone you’re doing a couple number, and neither of you has danced since the college fest.

So how early should you actually start? The short answer is earlier than you think, but probably not as early as you fear. The real answer depends on what you’re performing, how many people are in it, and how comfortable everyone is with dancing. At Motley Dance Company, we choreograph wedding performances for couples and families across Bangalore every season, and this is the timeline we’ve found works for most of them.

The quick answer

If you just want a number to plan around, here’s a rough guide:

Couple dance, both of you new to dancing: start 8 to 10 weeks before the wedding.

Couple dance, one or both of you have danced before: 5 to 6 weeks is usually enough.

Small group number (4 to 8 friends or cousins): 6 to 8 weeks.

Big family medley (15 people or more): 10 to 12 weeks, sometimes more.

Surprise performance by siblings or friends: 6 weeks, with extra time if people live in different cities.

These timelines assume one or two sessions a week with a choreographer, plus some practice at home. If you can only meet once a week, add a couple of weeks. If you can rehearse three times a week, you can tighten things up.

The rest of this guide explains why these numbers work, and how to use the weeks well once you’ve started.

Why you need more time than you think

Most people underestimate how long wedding choreography takes because they only think about learning the steps. Learning is actually the quickest part. What takes time is everything around it.

First, there’s choosing the song, cutting it to the right length and sometimes mixing two or three tracks together. Couples in Bangalore often want a mashup that moves from a romantic Hindi number into something more upbeat, maybe with a Kannada, Tamil or Punjabi track for the families. Getting that mix right can take a week on its own.

Then there’s the choreography itself, which a good choreographer builds around your comfort level, your outfits and the size of the stage. After that comes cleaning, which means going over each section until it looks smooth and confident rather than remembered. And finally there are rehearsals in costume, on a floor the size of the actual stage, with the actual music played through a proper sound system.

Squeeze all of that into three weeks and something gets rushed. Usually it’s the cleaning, which is exactly the part that makes a performance look polished on the wedding video.

Book your choreographer before you start rehearsing

Rehearsal time and booking time aren’t the same thing. Bangalore’s wedding season gets very busy, especially from November to February and around popular muhurat dates, and good choreographers fill their calendars early.

A sensible rule is to book your choreographer three to four months before the wedding, even if actual rehearsals won’t start for another month or so. That gives you time to discuss songs and ideas without pressure, and it means you’re not stuck with whoever is still free three weeks out.

If you’re still exploring options, our page on Choreography Services For Weddings explains how we work with couples and families, from first dances to full sangeet programmes.

A week-by-week rehearsal plan for a couple dance

Here’s how a typical 10-week plan looks for a couple who are both fairly new to dancing. If you have less time, compress the middle weeks, but try not to skip the last two.

Weeks 1 and 2: Music and foundations

Finalise your song or mix, and agree on the overall feel. Romantic and slow? Fun and filmy? A bit of both? This is also when your choreographer will get a sense of how you both move. If you’ve never danced together, these first sessions are often spent on basics like holding a frame, moving in time and turning without bumping heads. It’s not glamorous, but it makes everything after it much easier.

Some couples like to take a few regular classes during this phase to build confidence. Bachata is a popular choice for a first dance because of its slower tempo and close connection, and a handful of bachata dance classes in Bangalore before your choreography starts can make a real difference to how natural you look together.

Weeks 3 to 6: Learning the choreography

This is where the routine gets built, usually a section at a time. A three-minute couple dance might be split into four or five chunks, and you’ll learn one or two per session. Record every session on your phone. You’ll be surprised how much you forget between Saturday and Wednesday.

Try to practise at home at least twice a week, even if it’s just for 15 minutes in the living room. Short, regular practice sticks far better than one long session the night before class.

Weeks 7 and 8: Cleaning and confidence

By now you should know the whole routine. These two weeks are for making it look good. Your choreographer will work on details like timing your turns to the music, where you look, how you hold each other and how you enter and exit the stage.

This is also the point where nerves start to show up, especially for couples who aren’t used to performing. If that sounds like you, our blog on how to overcome stage fear during your wedding dance has some practical tips that work well alongside rehearsals.

Week 9: Costume rehearsal

Rehearse at least twice in your actual wedding outfits, or something very close to them. This matters more than most couples expect. A heavy lehenga changes how the bride turns. A long dupatta can catch on a hand during a spin. A sherwani restricts how high the groom can lift his arms, and new juttis or mojaris can be slippery on a stage floor.

If anything feels unsafe or awkward, you still have time to adjust the choreography. That’s much better than finding out on the night.

Week 10: Full run-throughs and buffer

Do full run-throughs with the final music, ideally in a space the size of your actual stage. Many Bangalore venues use raised or LED stages that are smaller than people imagine, so mark out the dimensions on the floor with tape if you can.

Keep this last week light. The aim is to stay fresh and confident, not to learn anything new. And leave a little buffer in case work travel, a family function or an illness cancels a session.

Planning a family sangeet medley

Family performances are where timelines slip the most, because you’re coordinating many people with different schedules and very different comfort levels. A grandmother, three cousins who danced in college and an uncle who has never danced in his life all need to look good in the same performance.

Here’s what helps.

Start earlier than the couple dance. Ten to twelve weeks is a safe window for a large group. It gives you time to handle missed sessions without panic.

Plan for relatives in other cities. It’s very common in Bangalore for half the family to live in Chennai, Mumbai, Hyderabad or abroad. Choreographers often handle this by recording practice videos for each group, then doing combined rehearsals once everyone arrives. Relatives who land a week before the wedding should get simpler parts and clear places in the formation.

Split the family into groups. The bride’s cousins, the groom’s friends, the parents and so on. Each group learns its own short segment, and then everything is stitched together. This is far easier than trying to get 25 people into one room every week.

Keep the hardest parts for the confident dancers. A good choreographer builds the performance so that strong dancers carry the tricky moves while others hold simple, clean formations. Everyone looks good, and nobody feels embarrassed.

Fix the order of performances early. Your sangeet host or event planner will need a running order, and knowing where your number sits in the evening helps with costume changes, sound cues and stage entries.

What if your wedding is only a month away?

It’s more common than you’d think, and it’s absolutely doable. You’ll just need to adjust expectations a little.

With three to four weeks, focus on a shorter routine, perhaps two to two and a half minutes rather than four. Keep the choreography simple and lean on strong moments, like a good entry, one or two memorable lifts or dips if you’re both comfortable, and a clean ending pose. Aim for three sessions a week if possible, and practise every day at home, even briefly.

Private sessions help a lot in this situation, because the whole class is built around you and your deadline. At Motley, we offer private classes at our studios or at your home, which saves a lot of travel time in the final few weeks when your calendar is already packed.

Common timing mistakes couples make

After working with a lot of wedding couples in Bangalore, we’ve noticed the same few mistakes come up again and again.

Choosing the song too late. Every week spent debating the song is a week not spent rehearsing. Pick a shortlist early and give yourselves a firm deadline to decide.

Stopping practice after learning the steps. Many couples relax once they know the whole routine and then feel shaky on the day. The cleaning phase is what turns remembered steps into a confident performance.

Skipping the costume rehearsal. Outfits change everything, and it’s the most common cause of last-minute changes to choreography.

Practising only in a small room. The stage will feel much bigger, or sometimes much smaller, than your living room. Practise in a space that matches it as closely as you can.

Leaving no buffer. Wedding weeks are unpredictable. Plan to be performance-ready a week before the sangeet, not the night before.

How often should you rehearse each week?

For most couples, two sessions a week with a choreographer works well, each about an hour. That’s enough to learn steadily without getting overwhelmed. In the final three weeks, adding a third session or a longer weekend rehearsal helps a lot.

Home practice matters as much as studio time. Fifteen to twenty minutes on three or four evenings a week, following your recorded videos, will keep everything fresh. It’s also a nice break from wedding planning, and plenty of couples say those evening practice sessions ended up being some of their favourite memories from the months before the wedding.

FAQs

Is two months enough time to prepare a wedding dance?

For most couples, yes. Eight weeks is a comfortable window for a couple dance if you rehearse regularly. Large family performances usually need a bit longer.

Can complete beginners do a choreographed wedding dance?

Absolutely. Family medleys can run longer because the energy keeps changing.

Start a little early and enjoy it

A wedding dance shouldn’t feel like one more stressful item on the to-do list.
