The steps make sense when the teacher counts out loud. Then the music starts, the counting stops, and suddenly nobody is quite sure where “one” is. Some people rush, some people freeze, and a lot of people quietly follow the feet of whoever is standing in front of them.

If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company. Finding the beat is one of the most common struggles for new dancers, and it has very little to do with talent. Salsa music is busy, layered and full of rhythms that pull your ear in different directions. Once you know what to listen for, though, it gets much easier. At Motley Dance Company, we spend a lot of time on this with beginners, and this guide covers the same approach we use in class.

Why salsa music feels harder to follow than other songs

Most of the music we grow up with in India, whether it’s film songs, pop or indie, has a strong, obvious beat that sits right on top. You can nod along without thinking about it.

Salsa is different. There are usually several percussion instruments playing at once, and each one has its own pattern. The bass often plays slightly ahead of the beat rather than on it. The piano repeats a pattern that seems to float across the beats. The singer might come in at an unexpected moment. All of this makes the music feel exciting to dance to, but it also means your ear doesn’t get one clear, loud signal telling it where to step.

So the goal isn’t to hear everything at once. It’s to learn which sounds to pay attention to and which ones to let fade into the background.

How salsa is counted

Before you can find the beat, it helps to know what you’re looking for.

Salsa music is counted in groups of eight. You’ll hear teachers count “one, two, three, five, six, seven” and skip four and eight. That’s because the basic step has three weight changes, then a pause, then three more and another pause. So your feet move on 1, 2, 3, pause on 4, move on 5, 6, 7, pause on 8.

Those eight counts cover two bars of music, and the pattern repeats all the way through the song. The most important counts are 1 and 5. In most beginner classes, the leader steps forward on 1 and back on 5, and the follower does the opposite. If you can find either of those, you can dance.

This is why so many teachers say “find the one.” If you’re in the right place on 1, everything else falls into place.

The difference between the pulse and the “one”

There are really two things to find in salsa music, and it helps to separate them.

The pulse is the steady, even beat running underneath the whole song. Tap your hand on your knee in time with the music and you’re tapping the pulse. Every count from 1 to 8 is a pulse.

The “one” is the start of each eight-count phrase. It’s the pulse that begins the pattern.

Most beginners can find the pulse fairly quickly. Finding which pulse is the “one” takes longer. So start by getting comfortable with the pulse, and only then start looking for where the phrase begins. Trying to do both at once is where a lot of people get stuck.

What to listen for in the music

You don’t need to know the names of every instrument to dance salsa. But knowing a few of them makes it much easier to find your way.

The cowbell

In many salsa songs, especially once the music gets livelier, you’ll hear a cowbell playing a loud, steady pattern that marks the main beats. It’s one of the easiest sounds for beginners to lock on to because it cuts through everything else. When you’re lost, listen for the bell.

The conga

The conga plays a repeating pattern called the tumbao. You’ll hear a sharp slap sound and some deeper, open tones. The open tones tend to fall around counts 4 and 8, right where your feet pause. That’s useful, because it gives your pause something to line up with. Dancers who dance On2 often lean on the conga a lot, because its pattern sits so closely with their timing.

The clave

The clave is a pair of wooden sticks that play a pattern stretched across the eight counts. It’s the rhythmic backbone of salsa, and everything else in the band is arranged around it. You won’t always hear it clearly in recorded music, but once you learn to recognise it, it becomes a very reliable guide. Don’t worry about the clave in your first few weeks. It’s something to come back to once the basics feel easier.

The bass and the piano

These are the two that trick people most. The bass often plays just before the beat, and the piano repeats a pattern that seems to dance around it. They’re lovely to listen to, but they’re not the best guides for your feet when you’re starting out. Let them sit in the background for now.

The singer

Beginners often try to follow the voice, and it rarely works. Singers in salsa phrase their lines freely and often start or end in the middle of a count. Enjoy the vocals, but don’t use them to decide where to step.

Clues that tell you where “one” is

Salsa music gives you plenty of hints about where each phrase starts, even if you can’t identify every instrument.

Big changes land on one. When the song shifts, for example when the horns come in, the chorus starts or the band suddenly stops and restarts, that change almost always happens on the one. These are great moments to reset your counting.

Phrases feel like they “start.” If you listen closely, each eight-count phrase has a sense of beginning. It’s a little like the start of a new line in a poem. With practice, you’ll start to feel that without counting.

The five feels similar to the one. Many beginners find the five first, which is completely fine. In the basic step, one and five are the two moments where you change direction, so if you’re stepping on five, you’re still in the right shape. Your teacher will help you shift across as your ear improves.

A step-by-step way to practise at home

The best way to get better at hearing salsa is to listen to a lot of it, but there’s a big difference between having it on in the background and actually practising. Here’s a simple routine you can follow in your living room. It only needs a few minutes a day.

Step 1: Listen without moving. Put on a salsa song and just listen for a minute. Try to pick out the cowbell or the steady pulse. Don’t count yet.

Step 2: Tap the pulse. Tap your hand on your leg or the table in time with the beat. Keep it steady and even. If you lose it, stop and start again.

Step 3: Count out loud. Once your tapping feels stable, start counting from one to eight along with it. It doesn’t matter if your “one” isn’t the real one yet. The aim is to get used to counting in eights.

Step 4: Listen for the changes. Keep counting, and notice where the song changes. When the chorus starts or the horns come in, check where your count is. If you’re on one, great. If not, adjust.

Step 5: Add your feet. Once counting feels natural, do your basic step on the spot while counting out loud. Pause on four and eight. Keep it small and relaxed.

Step 6: Stop counting out loud. After a few days, try counting silently, then try not counting at all and just feeling it.

It sounds slow, but most people notice a real difference within a couple of weeks. If you’d like a sense of how this fits into the bigger picture, our blog on how long it takes to learn basic salsa steps covers what the first two months of learning usually look like.

Use your Bangalore commute

This might be the most practical tip in the whole guide. Many of us spend a good chunk of the day stuck in Bangalore traffic, whether it’s Outer Ring Road, Silk Board or the drive into Indiranagar. That’s perfect listening time.

Make a salsa playlist and play it on your commute. Tap the pulse on the steering wheel or your knee. Count along when you’re stuck at a signal. You’re not going to dance in the car, but you are training your ear, and that’s half the work. Students who do this often find the music makes sense much sooner than those who only hear it in class.

Common mistakes when finding the beat

Rushing. Nerves make most beginners speed up. If you’re finishing your basic step before the music does, slow down and wait for the pause.

Stepping on four and eight. This happens a lot, especially for people who also dance bachata, where you tap on those counts. In salsa, four and eight are pauses. Hold still for a moment.

Following other dancers’ feet. It’s tempting, but the person in front of you might be off time too. Keep your attention on the music, not the room.

Following the singer. As mentioned above, vocals are beautiful but unreliable for timing.

Giving up after one song. Some songs are genuinely harder than others. If one track confuses you, try another with a slower tempo and a clearer beat. Build up to the faster ones.

Does it help to learn bachata or Afro-Cuban too?

It can. Bachata has a steadier, easier-to-hear beat than salsa, and many beginners find it builds their confidence with rhythm quite quickly. If salsa timing is frustrating you, a few bachata classes in Bangalore can be a gentle way to train your ear, as long as you remember that salsa pauses where bachata taps.

Afro-Cuban classes help in a different way. They focus on body movement to the rhythms that sit underneath salsa, so your body starts to feel the music rather than just counting it. Our Afro-Cuban batch runs as part of our dance classes in Indiranagar, and lots of our salsa students say it’s what finally made the music click for them.

How we help beginners with timing at Motley

In our beginner salsa batches at HSR Layout and Indiranagar, we spend real time on listening, not just steps. Students count out loud in the early weeks, and our teachers regularly stop the music at big changes so everyone can check where they are. We also rotate partners during class, which is useful for timing, because you get used to dancing with people who hear the music in slightly different ways.

If timing is something you’re worried about, don’t let it stop you from starting.
